COLE Publishing, established in 1979 in the heart of Wisconsin’s northwoods, has grown to become North America’s largest publisher of print, web and trade shows serving the water and wastewater industries. Our pride and success stem from the personal relationships we’ve forged and maintained over nearly forty years of working with our loyal friends and colleagues in the business.

Erik is our resident pop-culture guru. He knows what is hip with the cool kids and tries to keep us in the know. He knows what bands are going to be popular well before you have ever heard of them. He also designs and develops websites like a champ.

Title: Graphic Designer

Keri Heibel is colorful and creative. When she was in the 6th grade, she made a log cabin out of popsicle sticks, Elmer’s glue and a piece of green construction paper. We knew then she’d be the perfect person to lay out each issue of Cleaner. Keri’s eye for color and creative skills make the articles you read fancy and fun.

Jeff Lane overdresses, you see, all of his pants are khaki and shirts are knit and most of them have buttons. That makes us feel uncomfortable, but makes Jeff look professional. Jeff creates professional advertisements for our customers. I guess they say you have to look good to feel good. Jeff believes you have to look good to design good, and Jeff, you look marvelous!

Sherry Dobbins is a pro, and at only 5’2” she can dunk, donuts that is. Sherry loves her coffee and morning snacks. She also loves educating readers. She’s our professional editorial designer. She takes words and makes them into articles. Sherry got here in 2000, before that she worked at an educational software publishing company. She’s taught us a thing or two and is always eager to learn more. She takes regular, not decaf. But we’re trying to get her to switch.

Jim Kneiszel

Title: Editor - Pumper, PRO, Onsite Installer

Date started: September, 2004

Jim Kneiszel is a stylist too. His hair is really nice, perfectly parted and combed over like Ronald Reagan’s used to look - minus the Vitalis. Jim is the editor of Pumper, PRO, and Onsite Installer magazines. He has a different style than Ted, a little more quirky. He once designed an action figure for pumping portable toilets, then made it into his editorial - seriously. If you ever see him, mess up his hair.

Karen Safer is a banker, although she doesn’t know current interest rates and won’t give you an auto loan. What she does do, and has been doing since 1992, is making sure you get paid on time. She also makes sure things get collected on time, which by her own admission isn’t as much fun. What is fun is watching Karen drive in a snowstorm. Her speed usually doesn’t exceed the interest rate.

Title: Advertising Sales

Date started: April, 2009

Jim was widely recruited out of college, landing in the first round with Century 21 real estate. He sold homes to families for more than 15 years before we approached him and requested a trade. We sent Century 21 a third round draft pick in 2014, three Pumper t-shirts, and an autographed picture of Rolf Bernischke. In return, we got Jim. We think Jim’s got a few good years left in him before retirement. Though the walls sure do look empty without our Rolf Bernishcke photo.

Phil Hahn

Phil Hahn

Title: Advertising Sales

Date started: August, 2008

Phil used to be a pharmaceutical sales rep, traveling across northern Wisconsin visiting urologists, handing out free pens and post-its. Then one day his big corporate parent decided they didn’t want him handing out pens and post-its anymore. We thought Phil was way too talented to work at the local Dairy Queen, so we hired him to sell ads for our Treatment Plant Operator magazine. At first it was hard for Phil, because we don’t give away pens, but he seems to be doing okay now.

Title: Advertising Sales

Jim Flory gives good advice, not so much like a cheap psychiatrist or even your mother, but by helping you with your advertising. Jim came to COLE Publishing in 2001. You’d think with that pretty face he was maybe a model before joining us. Not the case, you see, Jim was a septic pumper, and a darn good one too. He ran his septic pumping business for more than 15 years, and that experience helps him understand this industry as well as anyone.

Title: Advertising Sales

Kim sells stuff, all kinds of stuff. No, she’s not your local Amway representative. She sells booth spaces and advertisements. Before Kim got here we sold ads door to door. It was inefficient and most people didn’t have a lot of used septic equipment. Then in 1996 Kim arrived and suggested we use the telephone to make sales calls. We’ve got to admit, things have really picked up since then.
